What does it mean to follow another Jelli user?
Since Jelli launched, we’ve had public profiles for every user where you can view assorted information about them such as their favorite tracks, the last station they were on, and an image, description and favorite link if they provided it.

Now you can also choose to follow another Jelli user. When you do that, they’ll be added to the People You Follow list on your profile page. Once they’re in your list, you can easily view their favorites (and vote for them all) or even send them a Jelli message – all without having to visit their profile page. Think of it as bookmarking all your favorite Jelli users so you can easily view them in one place.

How do I follow another Jelli user?
There are a few ways to follow another user:

  • Visit their profile page and click the “Follow” button.
  • If you see them in a Jelli chat room, click on their name and then click the “Follow” link.
  • If a user is following you but you are not yet following them, find them in the “Your Groupies” view on your profile page. Then click the “+” icon near their name to also follow them (this establishes a mutual follow relationship).

When you follow a user, they will receive a Jelli message to let them know.

When someone follows me, what kind of information can they see about me?
If a Jelli user follows you, they only have access to the same information that is already publicly available on your profile page. Following you just means that they’ve added you to their list of people they follow, sort of like bookmarking you.

What is all that stuff in the followers list on my profile page?
The list of people you follow and your list of groupies, a.k.a. your followers, contains some helpful features that make it easy to connect with your Jelli friends.

A: This indicates whether this Jelli user is online (green) or offline (grey). This indicator only appears when that user is also following you (mutual follow). Note that the online indicator appears if the user is on jelli.com or using the Jelli for iPone app.

B: The “following each other” label indicates a mutual follow relationship – you are following that user and they are following you. This enables you both to see when each other is online and on what station.

C: This is the station that the user is currently on. Click it to visit that station. This information only appears when that user is also following you (mutual follow).

D: Click the “View Favorites” button to view the favorites for that Jelli user. While viewing their list, you can click the “Vote for All” button to increase the score of their favorite tracks. Note that the votes will apply to the tracks on the station you’re currently listening to. If they’re on a different station than you, you should switch to that station and then vote for all their favorites.

Click the “Send Message” button to send that user a Jelli message.

E: Click the “Send a Shout” button to email that Jelli user to let them know you’re online and on what station. You can also add a custom message. Note that even if you’re in a mutual follow relationship with another user, the Send a Shout button may or may not appear depending on how they set their preferences.

F: In your Groupies view, you may see a “+ Follow” icon next to a user’s name. Click the icon to follow that user back, which will establish a mutual follow relationship. Sort of like giving your groupie a backstage pass. ;)

G: This is the X button to unfollow a user. Hover your mouse on their row to reveal the icon. Then click it to unfollow them and remove them from your list. More about unfollowing a user

H: Click the “Send a Shout to All” link to send a shout out email to all of your followers who are offline (rather than clicking each “Send a Shout” button next to each offline friend). This is a quick way to summon all your offline Jelli friends to get on the site and join you on your current station.

Are their extra benefits if another Jelli user and I follow each other?
Yes! When you and another Jelli user are both following each other, we call that a mutual follow relationship. When this occurs, extra information about each other is made available. You can each see when you’re online on Jelli, as well as what station you’re on at that time. If you’re offline, they can also choose to “Send a Shout” which generates an email to you (or you can send them one when they’re offline). This makes it easy for you to alert each other when you’re on Jelli (and the other is not).

How do I prevent someone from sending me a Shout message when I’m offline?
If you’d rather not receive Shout messages from your mutual followers, you can turn off the feature in your Jelli preferences. Visit your settings page, click the Preferences tab, then uncheck the box next to “Allow my followers to send me shouts”. Note that this will disable the Send a Shout button for all of your mutual followers, so none of them will be able to email you when you’re offline.

Can other users see my list of groupies or whom I’m following?
Yes, they can see the list of people you follow and your groupies when they visit your profile page. You can hide these lists if you wish. Just visit your Jelli settings and uncheck the “Show my followers on my profile page” preference.

Can I block someone from following me?
You can’t block someone but it’s also not necessary. When another user follows you, they are not getting access to any additional information about you. They can still only see what is publicly available on your profile. Following you just means they’ve added you to their follow list on their own profile page (which as mentioned above, can only be seen by them).

How do I unfollow someone?
There are a few ways to unfollow another user:

  • Visit their profile page and click the “Unfollow” button.
  • If you see them in a Jelli chat room, click on their name and then click the “Unfollow” link
  • On your profile page, view the list of People You Follow. Find the user in the list, hover your mouse on their row, then click the X box in the right corner of their row.

When you unfollow someone, they are not notified. However if you were in a mutual follow relationship with them, they will see the change reflected in their own list of followers. For example, they will no longer be able to see when you’re online and it will no longer say “following each other” next to your name in their list.
